Case Scenario: Layout Balancing Using Computer Simulation
The customer‘s requirement
Because of the changes in the blend characteristics over years, a production line with a maximum of 6000 kg/h is suspected to slow down the whole production. Considering the existing and future production portfolio, the challenge is to establish the extent to which it is necessary and cost efficient to upgrade the line. Rough initial estimates are at 8500 kg/h, but this would require considerable investment.
- Approach
- The current production is analysed using computer simulation. After comparing the simulation results with the existing production data, a number of „what if“ simulation scenarios are run. From the results which also include data from other production lines it is clear that a „peek“ saturation point is reached at 7500 kg/h. Thus, it is possible to reuse many of the existing components and to reduce the investment costs significantly.
